Russ & Daughters, which has been around since 1914, is the ultimate deli when you are in dire need of smoked fish. With a 10 hour train ride from downtown Manhattan to downtown Montreal ahead, we decided to pick up some eats for a lunch that was sure to be better than what the train offered. Without trying to sound too obnoxious, “Can you pass the caviar please”, we dived in with utter abandon and had one of the best “picnics” ever. When in NYC , take a visit, grab your ingredients and take it to Central park or wherever for an unforgettable meal. We chose the following:
Gaspe Nova Smoked Salmon: all their salmon is cold smoked and the Gaspe is a mildly smoked fish that is light and silky.
Belly Lox: which is not smoked but brined just like the originator did it in 1937.
Smoked Sablefish: This was the highlight of them all. This melt in your mouth smoked fish was like butter and the flavour was out of this world. ANOTHER one of Tanis’ “Last Meals”.
White fish and Baked Salmon Salad: This dish came as a recommendation from the monger and he promised us it would be a hit. We were halfway to Montreal when we realized we didn’t buy enough! He recommended we top it with some wasabi infused caviar and we were hooked. (NPI)
If you are into caviar you can get over 11 different types just be prepared to bring your wallet
One other thing to note is that you can order and have it shipped anywhere in the US. We have not done it yet but this New Years we will definitely splurge and have a piece of NY here in the valley. Go in with friends to get the best value and ship to Blaine or Point Roberts for an easy pick up. You are allowed to bring cured fish across the border so you won’t have any trouble. Bon Appetit!
